About the Gregg Smith reading—
ReplyDeleteAs far as splash pages being used at major plot points in the comics’ storylines, it seems to me that, in TV and film animation, the narrative techniques of story have to function as a substitute for a technique like splash pages, thereby linking crisis points in animation to those in literature.
Also, do television and film’s invisible, fixed screens illicit more or less creativity and closure in the audience? This unchangeable reality of canvas for TV and film is a restriction on the expressivity of the cartoon creator I think.
In addition, a pertinent topic to consider is how the reader’s personal speed, which is important when consuming comics, is replaced by the speed of the animation. It is like reading for pleasure. When you read something too fast, you may not enjoy it as much. We all have ingrained ways of being and doing. Some people might like to spend time analyzing details in comics. Such pleasure will be lost when viewing an animation.
